The Life in My Years

An anthology of life

It shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the six right wingnuts on the Supreme Court would pave an autobahn towards autocracy, closing out the SCOTUS session and in effect, closing out the scattered remains of democracy.

The timing was both ironic and convenient. Ironic in that SCOTUS issued its decision shit canning the whole idea that The United States is not a monarchy (or autocracy) mere days before we celebrate the signing of the document, 248 years ago, that condemned the monarchy it was getting read to overthrow. The decision is also convenient for the American autocrat in waiting, one convicted felon named Donald John Trump, who’s firing up the engine on his redesigned MAGA to take a ride on that very autobahn.

Martin Fredericks IV is a pull no punches blogger whom I’ve been following for some years now. He puts the most recent SCOTUS outrage in proper angry perspective. Please read Martin’s piece, U.S. Supreme Court Clobbers Democracy.

  1. This post is of utmost importance. I wish more folks cared enough to do something to change the direction this country is going. It will have a negative impact not only on people of color but also on those who have average or below average incomes. Trump will favor only himself and the wealthy of this country! I have corresponded with African American friends who are fearful and despondent. I am concerned about my children who are adopted and POC with below average incomes. I am also concerned about Medicare, Medicaid, social security and other income sources for the elderly and impoverished.

I will reply with a direct email for the rest since Akismet rejects any weblink.

Hello Stewart, You wrote, “I wish more folks cared enough to do something to change the direction this country is going.” I just reposted a piece that addresses your concern – and it isn’t pretty. American’s by and large have responded with something along the lines of, “Did you see what SCOTUS did? Hmm. How are the Yankees doing in the standings? That’s what I want to know.”

In other words Stewart – crickets. Very quiet crickets.

I agree with you that a second Trump term will go badly for POC and other marginalized groups. It will also go bad for anyone who isn’t an oligarch or those rich individuals who don’t toe the Trumpist line. Just ask the wealthy in Hungary who didn’t go along with Viktor Orban, who is, by the way, the darling of the Republican right.

We all stand to suffer in any number of areas.
Education: Trump and the Heritage Foundation plan to institute so-called patriotic education.
      The environment.
      Freedom of the press.
      Free speech.
The right to protest: It was Trump who suggested using live ammunition of BLM protesters.
Healthcare: Trump has vowed to repeal the ACA. He will further destroy women’s access to healthcare. He proposes cutting off funds from any school districts that mandate vaccinations, including the vaccines that have been used for decades.
Economically: Trump will give the rich another tax break and the payment will be on the backs of what’s left of the middle class and the poor. Trump’s proposed tariffs will raise the price of anything that is made completely or in part, overseas.
Freedom of/from religion: Watch red states mimic what Louisiana just did.

In the end, people who support Trump will see just how quickly he can turn on people.

They say that an addict has to hit rock bottom before turning himself around. Does America have to hit MAGA bottom before rejecting Trumpism? Can we rise from MAGA bottom? Sadly, we are seeing a worldwide turn to the right.

Finally, I do know Heather Cox Richardson. I read her pieces occasionally. The ones that you forwarded in DM are excellent.
      Regards
      Paul
