The Life in My Years

An anthology of life

Every now and again a Lens Artists Challenge beckons and this most recent challenge hollered, “come on down.”

Over the past few years I’ve become so captivated by black and white or, monochrome that when I compose an image I try to image what it will look like in monochrome.

My banner photo was taken at the Südtiroler Platz-Hauptbahnhof station, in Vienna. I shot this image very early on a Sunday morning while the usual hordes of people were enjoying sleeping in.

Vienna is known for it’s grand Baroque buildings but there is some magnificent modern architecture, particularly at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Yeah, well, the photo below was not taken there because a rent-a-cop at the university asked me not to take photos. My sense is that the architect would not be pleased with someone banning photos of his work. The building below is the OBB building across the street from Hauptbanhof station.

The tallest building in San Francisco is the much maligned Salesforce Tower. A small fraction of that building is pictured below.

Below is the once maligned and now mostly beloved TransAmerica Pyramid in San Francisco. When the Pyramid was proposed the San Francisco public was in alternate states of embarrassment and outrage. All (well, almost all) is forgiven now that it’s become an iconic part of the San Francisco skyline.

The two photos below can be cataloged in the “I was just goofing around and had nothing better to do during COVID” category.

The following portraits were taken on my first SLR, a Canon A1 in 1978 on Ektachrome slide film.

On New Years Day 2026, my dog Lexi was lounging on a futon in the home office. The futon has for years been christened Lexi’s couch and the home office is Lexi’s office.

Thank you to Ritva at Ritva Sillanmäki Photography for choosing this wonderful topic. Please hop over to her site to see her take on minimalist black and white.

    Hi Paul,

Love your black and white shots, especially the ones of the buildings. There’s something so calm about them in monochrome that doesn’t exist in colour.

    Lexi’s pretty sweet too!

Hi Eden, Thank you for reading and commenting. I need to visit another city for more architecture opportunities. I might even consider a drive to L.A. 🤮
And yes, Lexi is always the crowd pleaser – as it should be.

  4. I have to say I liked all your photos in this post, but I do have to say you shine in your architectural images. The Header is great, and as are the TransAmerica Pyramid, OBB building. I am glad you answered the hollow 😀 and joined

Thank you so much Ritva. Whenever I’m in a city and I have my camera with me (which is almost always) I always remember to stop and look up.

I’m very glad you jumped on board with this challenge Paul 🙂 I really like your architecture shots in particular. I never knew there was any controversy over the TransAmerica Pyramid – I’ve always liked it! And that portrait of Lexi is just beautiful!

Hi Sarah, Thank you for the kind words. Every now I’m inspired to join a photo challenge. During the planning stages the Pyramid was the subject of debates and lawsuits. Where it sits was once upon a time beachfront property. Here’s an interesting article on the history of the Pyramid.

That was an interesting read – thank you 🙂 I was fascinated by the remains of the whaling ship being discovered buried there!

Hello Ann-Christine. It’s nice to drop by. Thank you so much for the kind words. Yes, my big girl best friend always steals the show.
I noticed that you had read my previous piece. I have to tell you that I’m embarrased for my country and I apologize for how our current administration is treating our decades long friends in Europe. My paternal roots are in Sweden and it’s one country that I have on my list to visit. Now, unfortunately we’ve put off travel plans outside of America.
Thank you again for reading and commenting.

Paul, I was sure I had answered you – but it doesn’t seem so! Well, we follow every step over there, and hope something good will come out of it, soon. Despair is what we feel, I guess most of your fellow Americans despair as well.
If you ever go to Sweden – just send me a line !

Hello Ann-Christine, More Americans by the day are feeling despair. Still not enough. Sadly, as bad as things are they will have to get even worse before enough Americans say, “enough.”

Warm thanks, Paul. Welcome to visit when you can! We are all worried for your people and for the world. How can so much power be given to one person?
    Keep well💖
